Delta Variant Encourages Some Countries to Return to Blockage | Voice of America
The delta variant of the coronavirus has somehow blocked Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh with parts of Portugal. Even Israel, where more than half of the population is vaccinated, imposes mask obligations in closed public places.
The first variant found in India has been identified in at least 85 countries and is “the most infectious variant ever identified and is rapidly spreading to unvaccinated populations. “More,” said Tedros Adanom Gebreyes, Executive Director of the World Health Organization, on Friday.
Sydney, Australia’s largest city, began a two-week blockade on Saturday due to an increasing number of cases of COVID-19, a disease caused by the coronavirus.
The Delta variant is due to the first blockade in Sydney since December. Stay-at-home orders also apply to other parts of Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales.
New Zealand has suspended an unquarantine trip between two neighbors for three days due to an outbreak in Australia. On Monday, Bangladesh entered a week-long national blockade, allowing people to leave home only for medical reasons.
The Delta variant is also behind the surge in incidents in Russia. St. Petersburg, which will host the Euro 2020 football quarterfinals next Friday, has announced that there have been 107 COVID-19 deaths, a daily record for the city, since the pandemic began on Saturday.
And this variant is alerting across Africa, with cases increasing by 25% in a week.
“We are in the exponential stage of a pandemic, and the number is very, very, very, very much,” said virologist Triode Oliveira, director of research at KwaZulu-Natal University in South Africa. It’s increasing rapidly. “
Meanwhile, health officials said the delta variant of the coronavirus has its own variant called deltaplus. This has occurred in nearly 12 countries, including India, the United States and the United Kingdom, and authorities fear that Delta Plus may be more contagious than Delta variants. Scientists have just begun researching new strains.
The Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center reported on Saturday that the global number of COVID-19 cases exceeded 180 million. The United States continues to be the most infected with 33.6 million, followed by India with 30.1 million and Brazil with 18.3 million.
According to Hopkins, 2.8 billion doses of the vaccine were given.
