Wurzburg – Investigators were looking for motives behind the attack on Saturday in Würzburg, Germany, where a man armed with a long knife killed three and injured at least five.

The suspect, a 24-year-old Somali, was arrested after being shot by police and attacked in the downtown area of a southern city on Friday afternoon. Police said his life was not at stake and was being cross-examined at the hospital.

Bavarian Supreme Security Officer Joachim Harman said the suspect was known to police and had been hospitalized in psychiatry a few days ago. He told news agency dpa late Friday that he could not deny the motives of Islamic extremists. One witness reported that the suspect had heard “Arafakbar” in Arabic, shouting “God is wonderful.”

The man has lived in Würzburg since 2015 and recently lived in a homeless shelter. Apparently he didn’t know the victim.

A video posted on social media showed a pedestrian trying to surround the attacker and keep the attacker away with chairs and sticks.
