The Attorney General of New York said Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $ 230 million to resolve allegations that pharmaceutical giants have contributed to the opioid crisis.

The deal announced on Saturday requires Johnson & Johnson to make a series of payments covering the total over a nine-year period. Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement that the drug company also agreed to end the production and distribution of opioids in New York and other countries.

“We helped the fire, but today they have promised to quit their opioid business not only in New York, but across the country,” James said.

Johnson & Johnson said in a statement on Saturday that the settlement was “not an endorsement of liability or misconduct by the company.”

“Actions related to marketing and promotion of important prescription analgesics are appropriate and responsible,” he added.
